Course description

This is a Topics in Literature course. Students engage in the study of literature through a particular theme or topic of literary study. Students gain necessary skills for literary analysis, critical thinking, and writing at the university level. Dark Nights and Dark Knights will examine stories that treat transformations of the individual during a long, dark night of the soul. Humans sometimes must face horrors, both external and internal, at night, and we will examine some of these horrors and how literature treats them and the outcomes of individuals’ struggles with them. We will also examine individuals who deliberately set out to confront these horrors, the vigilantes or dark knights of society. We will study poems, short stories, a play, a novel, two movies, and two graphic novels.
