Course description

This is a Topics in Literature course. Students engage in the study of literature through a particular theme or topic of literary study. Students gain necessary skills for literary analysis, critical thinking, and writing at the university level. The topic for this course is Music and Literature. We will explore how works of literature describe and use music. How do written texts represent music, which is traditionally difficult to represent? How does music influence social and interpersonal interactions? How does music inspire writers to philosophize about art and the meaning of life? We will study novels, short stories, poems, essays, and a movie, mostly drawn from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
